Massachusetts Passes Bill to Cover Advanced Breast Screenings

Massachusetts health insurers will soon be required to cover advanced screenings for patients with dense breast tissue or abnormal mammograms. Governor Maura Healey signed the bill into law this week, marking a critical step in improving early detection of breast cancer.

Dense breast tissue, found in nearly half of women over 40, can obscure mammogram results and increase the risk of undiagnosed cancer. The National Cancer Institute highlights the importance of additional imaging, like MRIs and ultrasounds, to catch cancers that standard mammograms might miss. Under the new law, these diagnostic exams will be covered by insurance, addressing a significant gap in care.

The Massachusetts legislation mirrors goals set by the Find It Early Act, a federal bill sponsored by Representatives Rosa DeLauro and Brian Fitzpatrick. The act aims to expand insurance coverage for advanced breast cancer screenings nationwide, building momentum to ensure equitable access for all patients.
